COWS BY THE WATER – ALBERT OEHLEN
8 aprile 2018 - 6 gennaio 2019
From Sunday 8th April 2018 Palazzo Grassi presents ‘Cows by the Water’, a solo exhibition dedicated to the German artist Albert Oehlen (1954, Krefeld, Germany) curated by Caroline Bourgeois.
The exhibition traces a path along the production of Albert Oelhen through a selection of about 85 works, from the best known to the less known, made from the 80s to today and coming from the Pinault Collection and important private collections and international museums.
‘Cows by the water’ presents a novel, non-chronological setting, but marked by a syncopated rhythm between the different genres and periods, thus underlining the central role of music in the artist’s production, a metaphor of his working method where contamination and rhythm, improvisation and repetition, density and harmony of sounds become pictorial gestures.
Albert Oehlen establishes himself as one of the protagonists of contemporary painting thanks to a constantly evolving research dedicated to overcoming formal limits and experimentation, rather than to the subject of the work.
‘Cows by the water’ at Palazzo Grassi is the largest monographic exhibition in Italy dedicated to Albert Oehlen, already the protagonist of important exhibitions all over the world – among others at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana in 2017, at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 2016, at the New Museum in New York in 2015, at the Kunstmuseum in Bonn in 2012 and at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 2009.
